Dakar has a rich cultural heritage, and is a West African hub and the capital of Senegal. You can immerse yourself in the heart of the Senegalese culture by walking in the Medina.
At the heart of the old city, you discover the heart of the Moors; it is home to lots of jewelry. If you continue your journey, you'll find the Great Mosque of Dakar, whose architecture is inspired from the one in Rabat. You can also climb on top of the minaret to discover the beautiful view of Dakar. The city is located at the tip of the peninsula of Cape Verde and bottom fishing is one of the engines of the local economy. Diving in the heart of the Dakar you will discover the astonishing mixture between tradition and modernity.
At the heart of the Medina, you'll come across many markets and can find everything. You feel all kinds of smells: spices, incense, fresh fruit ... If you have to select one, you can go on the Sandaga market the largest African market: the fabrics of all colors, crafts or local food sit on the shelves. But another market has a great interest: the Tilene Market, it is the African market by excellence; you will find only fruits and vegetables, products that you've never seen.
If you have time remaining, then go on the island of Gorée. It is classified as "World Heritage Site of Humanity" and reminds 350 years of slavery and slave trade. Slave House has always chains and shackles which slaves were tied. The island has a very special atmosphere.
Dakar is a good starting point to visit Senegal... although it would be reluctant to go away quickly! Its historic center is easily visited on foot.
