Manukau travel guide

Overview

Manukau, one of the North Island’s largest cities, is located on the northern part of the island, only a few minutes’ drive from the Auckland metropolitan area. Known locally as South Auckland, it is New Zealand's third most densely populated city, and a truly multicultural location... over 60 different ethnic groups being represented among its residents.

A narrow strip of land called the Otahuhu isthmus connects Manukau to Auckland. The Auckland International airport is in fact located in Manukau. The Hunua Range, with forests, lakes and vast wilderness areas, and the Tamaki River, which forms an estuary area at the Hauraki Gulf, are both perfect destinations for outdoor enthusiasts. Manukau enjoys a temperate climate with beautiful summers and mild winters. The municipal bus service is clean, effient and user-friendly, or consider renting a bicycle to explore the countryside.

Manukau isn't an especially well-known destination within New Zealand, but it does receive a few travelers, most of whom are families on their way to visit the Rainbow’s End theme park and the oldest shopping mall on the North Island.
