Porirua travel guide

Overview

Porirua is a large city near the Wellington metropolitan area on the North Island of New Zealand. With a population of over 50,000 residents, Porirua lies along the two arms of the Porirua Harbour.

Porirua Harbor, once a prosperous whaling station, served as Wellington’s original harbor until motorized vessels arrived. Nowadays, it is a scenic water playground for both vacationing locals and visitors, with a unique history and allure of its own.  Hire a boat for fishing or sightseeing along the coast, discover one of several popular dive spots, swim in the bay or meander around the Pauatahanui Inlet – a popular spot for windsurfing, waterskiing, jetskiing, and bridge-diving locals. Be sure to experience Plimmerton Beach, one of the city’s original settlements and about a minute’s drive from the railway station, for more sun, sand, and watersport action.

Porirua’s main attractions also include its many boutiques and unique malls, don’t miss the enormous Wrightston building downtown if shopping is what you’re after. Get fresh produce and locally-made gourmet food items Saturday mornings at the downtown farmer’s market.
