Overview

Surrey, British Columbia is part of the Greater Vancouver area. With a population of 300,000 people, it has its own identity as a city and benefits from the proximity to Vancouver. It has low population density and is quite ethnically diverse, with a bulk of the population being of Asian descent.

Surrey hosts an annual festival in February called WinterFest, which hosts live music, sporting events, fireworks and food. Surrey is also home to many other festivals throughout the year, the most recent arrival being the Fusion Festival, which celebrates the dynamic culinary influences in the area. Surrey also hosts an International Writer's Conference annually, which allows local writers to meet with publishers from larger centers and have their work discovered.

Surrey is accessible by Vancouver's Sky Train, which makes it easy to get to downtown Vancouver to take advantage of the larger city's amenities while affording its residents a quieter, more spacious lifestyle.

Surrey has a pleasant climate, which allows for outdoor activities much of the year, including affordable golf courses. It has a large variety of migratory birds, and bird watching in Surrey's many parks is a popular activity. Surrey is also close to the Vancouver International Airport, which makes travel very easy for its residents.

From Crescent Beach, you can watch for whales and seals while you enjoy the sunshine and the water. This is a popular place for families and for romantic walks on the beach. Who wouldn't want to watch whales in the Harbour while the sun sets?

Surrey has some of the best Indian food restaurants in Canada. Try Mahek Restaurant for excellent service and food with reasonable prices. For Southern Indian food, Mayuri fits the bill, but won't leave you with a large bill.

While most will go into Vancouver for the nightlife, there are a few pubs in Surrey worth visiting. The ULounge has a great ambiance with friendly staff, and the Fleetwood Arms pub has a relaxed and cozy atmosphere with great staff, fast service and good food. It's a wonderful place to find the locals and meet with friends. The best neighborhood pub is Sawbuck's, where you will feel like everyone is your oldest friend and the bartender is your former classmate.
