North Carolina Travel Guide

Overview

North Carolina is a charming travel destination offering a range of striking landscapes from imposing mountains to tranquil sandy beaches. For a beachside atmosphere, the most popular regions are the Cape Fear Coast, Outer Banks, and the Crystal Coast for a relaxing getaway. The Outer Banks are home to Cape Hatteras National Seashore, a protected park covering over 70 square miles of endless outdoor recreation options. Seaside communities such as Wilmington, Nags Head and Atlantic Beach are notorious for their family entertainment possibilities. In contrast to the coastal regions, the North Carolina Mountains and Blue Ridge Mountains offer skiing, snowboarding, camping and hiking. Intriguing cities such as Durham, Charlotte, Raleigh, Chapel Hill and Asheville are major cultural and intellectual centers providing an array of attractions.

Chapel Hill is home to the University of North Carolina's main campus, spanning 730 gorgeously maintained acres. Visit the Morehead Planetarium for fascinating information and exhibits including an innovative “Star Theater.” The North Carolina Botanical Garden provides enchanting themed gardens and walking paths. The university infuses the city with a vibrant, youthful atmosphere and the streets are always crowded with students around street-side cafes and live music venues.

Asheville offers visitors sophisticated big-city amenities balanced with incredibly charming small town friendliness. The Blue Ridge Mountains surround the city and provide a magnificent backdrop for all kinds of outdoor adventures. The most popular options here are fishing, mountain biking, whitewater rafting, and llama expeditions. Don't miss the 150-foot naturally formed rock waterslide in Pisgah National Forest. Take a journey down the Urban Trail, a scenic path that leads visitors past intriguing sculpture gardens, historical sights and fascinating architecture. The Biltmore Estate, the largest private residence in the country, is an unbelievably decadent French Chateau style compound over 100 years old and is open to the public for tours of the home and gardens, acres of trails, and the popular vineyard and award-winning winery.

The North Carolina Mountains are a hotbed of recreational activities, the majority of which can be found along the Blue Ridge Parkway near Asheville. For incredible skiing, visit Banner Elk and its two major ski resorts, Sugar Mountain and Hawknest. Nearby Blowing Rock is known for its amusing assortment of family oriented attractions including Mystery Hill’s magic, illusions, riddles and science exhibits.    New Bern is the perfect place to go for more family fun. The town is surrounded by wide rivers and towering forests, and guided tours are available for a hassle-free excursion. Other fun activities include public arts and crafts venues offering hands-on creative fun, and farm days where children can experience a day on a real working farm and participate in a number of authentic activities.
